It's the locks along the canal that bother us

We'll take you through one and make sure you know what to do. You'll soon get the hang of them and even enjoy them! The important things are to take things safely and at a steady pace. Good manners to other boaters matter too, don't push in front or get impatient. People will always help. Basically a lock is just a tank of water that your boat can float in to when it is almost empty. The tank fills and the boat goes out at a higher level. Or you enter when the lock is full, empty it and come out lower down. So locks take canal boats up or down hills.
