So how do you "drive" a canal boat?

Nearly all canal boats are steered from the rear using a 'tiller' like you find on many other boats and yachts. Steering from the back is actually easier because you can see where all your boat is going. Engine controls are a simple single lever, forward for forward, back for reverse. When passing other boats you go to the right. Canal boats are limited to 4 miles per hour, about walking pace. This can seem slow at first, but going faster can damage the canal banks and other boats. You should slow right down when going past moored boats. This is a relaxing holiday and you'll see far more things of interest at this natural pace.
